After a long hike, we stumbled on a familiar family restaurant for lunch, Denny’s.

Missing from the menu were the Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches and greasy spoon faire we are used to. Instead, there were lunch sets with soup and salad.

The kid’s menu was Pokemon themed

We spent one afternoon at the Ueno zoo.
The zoo felt a bit old fashioned. I’ve never seen elephants so close before, but their enclosure was surrounded by electric fence and felt a bit sad.

Jackass penguins were entertaining

A Thai pavillion
These monkeys were very cute.
The star of the zoo are the Panda bears. There were lineups to see them.

5 storied pagoda in Ueno park.

This police kiosk looks like it came from outer space.

Ueno Park is huge and includes several museums and brutalist architecture.
Fast and comfortable, these trains are better than travelling by plane.
Look at all the legroom. You can get up and walk around whoever you like. There are washrooms in every car and a clerk pushes a cart selling snacks after each stop.

A day trip from Kyoto was a movie theme part, Toei Studios where they still film Japanese movies and TV shows.
This is the Ninja Acadamy
We were given ninja training and we had to cross a bridge.

A ninja must balance well.
We had to go under the ropes without ringing the bells.

This is a fake old street and train.
We had to sneek down the lane.
On the way, we posed in photo cutouts.
We watched people make a Samurai movie.
